What is Common Core?
Common Core is the new State Standards that are taught to every student throughout America. For short you might see Common Core labelled as CCSS, which stands for Common Core State Standards.
How is Common Core different than other standards my son or daughter has had in the past?
The short answer is common core is much more complex. Common core has what is called the 8 Mathematical Practice standards (or MP for short), below I have listed them and a link for each that provide the long answer.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP4 Model with mathematics.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically.
